I wrote this after the Lions season ended last year... but still so good!

So Here Are The 5 Common Themes to the Lions Success:

🦁GRIT:
Do the work to the best of your ability. The work that no one else is willing to do. Do it even when you don’t feel like doing it. Fall in love with doing it.

🦁Focus on what's in front of you:
Put most of your energy into the next play, the next quarter, the next half, the next game. Don’t dwell on the past, celebrate your wins, but be ready to put your attention toward what you can do next to be at your best for the upcoming task.

🦁Do your job:
Everyone in the organization has different roles/jobs. You can’t do your job to the best of your abilities if you are spending time, energy and attention on someone else’s job.

🦁Trust the process:
I saw a quote the other day- “There are only wins and lessons”. Create a solid plan. Learn from the wins on what you did well that helped you to win. When you don’t win, learn why you didn’t and make adjustments so it doesn’t happen again. So here is the process: Set a plan, learn lessons, adjust, enjoy wins, repeat.

🦁Believe:
You NEED a deep rooted belief that you can do it. That you were created for something great. AND that you deserve to have it. If this team had the S.O.L. mentality, the grit, the focus, the attention to your job, the trust… none of it works.

How does this relate to you and your fitness goals?

Grit: 💪🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♀️
About 95% of the world has health problems. Elite weightlifters deadlift 2x their body weight. Elite 5k times are around 25 minutes. People who want this level of health, strength and endurance/speed love doing the work and effort that no one else is willing to. If you want that kind of status, you must be willing to develop the GRIT it takes to get there.

Focus On What Is In Front Of You: 💪🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♀️
Who you are right now is a result of all the things you have done in your past. You can continue to blame who you are today on your past, or you can decide that you will be a different person right now, in this moment to create a better future self. Continue to focus on being your best self for the next step of your life. If you do this: In 1 year you will see some great progress, in 2 years winning will be expected, in 3 years you won’t be in the same league as you once were.

Do Your Job: 💪🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♀️
When it comes to your health you are in control of what you put in your body. How you move your body. How you let your body recover. You can’t control your genetics, but you can control your work ethic and focus. You can’t control your partner's nutrition or what food they bring in your house, but you can control what you put in your mouth. You can’t control your kids' sports/activities schedule, but you can get up and move instead of sitting and watching. You can’t control if your toddler will wake up in the middle of the night, but you can make the best possible sleep environment to improve your sleep quality. Put your energy and attention to what you can control and not on what is going on around you.

Trust The Process: 💪🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♀️
Just like the 2021 season, at the start you will learn more lessons than you will earn wins. Enjoy the wins, but also continue to learn the lessons about what makes you successful and what doesn’t serve your progress.

Believe: 💪🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♀️
If you have struggled with living your ideal in the past, you might be carrying the S.O.L. baggage. IT IS A MUST: develop the mindset that you were created for something great. The world has an abundance of opportunity for you. Find your purpose (what really motivates you to be your best) and start to take your steps toward greatness.

For me it is easier to come up with strategies that help keep cravings at bay with minimal damage over just always saying “no” and eventually a flood of poor eating decisions.

Growing up my mom always had an amazing dessert after dinner. As an adult I found it to hard to not have a dessert.

So now when I’m trying to lose some body fat I chop up 2 squares of chocolate. Enough to get that sweet taste and at 40cal not enough to stress or slow down my progress to much!

I was just talking to a client who knew she had some stressful times coming up. Her usual “stress relief” is to reach for something sweet and salty. Together we came up with a plan to put on some music and head out for a short walk when that urge creeps up!

On Sunday, the Youth Basketball and Volleyball programs began at Great Lakes Athletic Club. The Youth Basketball and Jr. Basketball programs for ages 4-12 focus on drills to improve rhythm, speed, balance, and coordination, teaching skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting. The Youth Volleyball program for ages 7-12 teaches serving, passing, setting, blocking, and hitting, promoting communication, teamwork, and focus.

A lot of talk about chemicals in food lately.
Can you guess what food this is? (Don't spoil it... just comment if you knew or didn't know)

Can we always follow simple rules like:
"If you can't read something on the label, don't put it in your body."
OR
"If there is more than 5 ingredients, it's not healthy."
OR
"Chemicals in food are bad."?

Recently our 12 year old son asked me those very same questions.

Here is what I told him-
Well buddy, those kind of short easy statements sound great on a post or a short video, they are not always true.

Everything is made from chemicals. That's right, EVERYTHING!

What if I told you to put Dihydrogen Monoxide in your body?
Sounds dangerous right?

Well Dihydrogen Monoxide is the chemical description of water.

Then I told him about this picture I've posted every few years for the past 10 years or so.

The food listed in the picture is a organic blueberry🫐. That's right... just as nature intended it.

Why don't you see those things listed when you pick up your package of blueberries? Well that has to do with FDA and government regulations, not based on if something is healthy or not.

While we personally believe that when it comes to food- as natural as possible is more ideal for our health. There is also plenty of scientific evidence to support the additives and chemicals to produce many of the "factory made" foods in your grocery stores are not greatly detrimental to your health in small dosages.

We are not here today to tell you that you shouldn't have a little skepticism that large food corporations would value profits over potential health risks. We are also not telling you that Blue Takis are as healthy as blueberries.

We are here today, to remind you that it is easy to be convinced that something can be true. It is easy to "buy into" something especially when it seems 1) logical in our heads, 2) has a cute "tag line" and 3) confirms a previously held belief. ESPECIALLY IN THE HEALTH AND FITNESS WORLD!

12 years ago, you would have heard me saying "YES" you can follow those rules... but the more learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

What we can say- is that we will continue to learn from scientific research and experts in our field and provide you with the most up to date science based information possible!

Trainer Thought of the Day:
You have to start caring to take care of yourself.

For me it is super easy to put the needs of others in front of my own.

From childhood I knew I wanted to be a "care taker" or a "saver".
I went to school to become a teacher, I now work as a personal trainer/coach.

I'm a father of 4.

I would often find myself prioritizing the well-being of my clients, family and friends over my own health and sanity. I was low energy, irritable, not improving my health the way I wanted to, and flat out not happy with life.

It took me some time but I figured out I need to have systems in place to keep my health high on my priority list.
⏰I put my workouts in my schedule (and keep it like I would if I were my own client).
⏰I wake up a little early to journal, set out the day, and get a healthy meal.
⏰I plan my outfits for the week in advance to eliminate extra decisions in the morning.
⏰I carve out time to have healthy food on hand.

Sure there is some guilt that comes with sacrificing the 5 hours a week away from the family to exercise.... but what I can give them in return pays off huge.

This has allowed me to be healthy and happy (even in the craziest of times). It has allowed me to give more energy and focus to the people around me. It has freed me to give the world the best version of myself.

You have to start caring to care for yourself. Equally (if not more) than your kids, you your loved ones and your job.

We want to inform our members that temporary walls have been installed in various locations throughout the building as construction work begins. These walls are necessary to ensure everyone's safety while keeping the construction activities separate from the main fitness areas.

For instance, the temporary wall located at the west end of the track is designed to create a safe boundary. It will be removed once construction is complete, allowing the track to fully reopen with all three lanes available.

Additionally, there are temporary walls in our lobby area, near the Mind & Body Studio, and outside of Studio B. These walls separate the active fitness areas from those under construction. Once the construction is finished, these walls will also be removed, revealing our new Senior Area, Children's Center, as well as back offices and studio space.

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and cooperation during this time. Thank you!
